Over the last 24hours I participated in a hunger strike with Hearts 4 Hope, an amazing organization out of the Bronx, NY committed to fighting social injustices. This fast was designed to help raise money to fight hunger among the homeless.
I started my fast at 7pm Thursday evening, It seemed simple at first, but I knew the toughest part was yet to come. It was interesting putting myself in the shoes (or stomach) of a homeless person. It made me appreciate each meal I am blessed to receive in a different light. Around 11am (16hrs w/ out anything to eat or drink) was when I first started to feel hungry. I was working and staying busy so it was fairly easy to get my mind off lunch.
The last 3hrs of work dragged, as I was longing to be away from there and start focusing on my source of strength (Jesus). Once I left work (19hrs without any food or drink), I really started to just become thirsty more than anything. After some errands, I finally made it home and had 3 long, lonesome hours to gut it out. Each minute seemed to go by slower than the last and I knew this was when I needed to just press into Jesus. At this point it I was having trouble focusing on anything for more than 5 minutes and a pretty bad headache set in.
As the hours turned to minutes, I kept praying for Jesus to carry me through this. I knew I was gonna make it, but it was uncomfortable to say the least. I couldn’t have done it without His help, His strength, or His love.
The single thing that struck me the most was that even though I wasn’t going to eat for 24hrs, I still knew when my next meal was going to come; Friday around 7pm. As for those facing the true reality of homelessness, They don’t when they will eat again. So please join with Danny and Hearts 4 Hope as we all try to combat this injustice and spread the Love of Jesus.
Stay Strong and Be Blessed
